Independent Scientific Testing Confirms DeWipe Removes Harmful Contaminants
Results based on clinical testing conducted by Manchester Metropolitan University.
Introduction
DeWipe’s effectiveness at removing hazardous contaminants from skin has been independently tested by researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).
Controlled laboratory testing conducted by leading toxicology and environmental science specialists demonstrated that DeWipe is capable of removing harmful compounds commonly found in soot, combustion residues and industrial contamination.
These substances include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and chlorinated dioxins, both of which are associated with long-term occupational health risks.

Why This Matters
Many industries expose workers to environments containing hazardous combustion by-products and chemical contaminants.
Examples include:
Fire and emergency services
Heavy industry and mining
Aviation ground operations
Oil, fuel and hydrocarbon handling
Construction and demolition
These contaminants can enter the body through dermal absorption, meaning toxins deposited on the skin can pass into the bloodstream if not removed promptly.
Effective rapid decontamination is therefore a critical part of reducing long-term exposure risk.
Key Scientific Findings
Independent testing conducted by researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) confirmed that DeWipe can effectively remove hazardous contaminants from skin in controlled laboratory conditions.
Key findings include:
- Up to 91% removal of harmful PAHs (including Benzo[a]pyrene) from skin in a single pass*
- 99% removal of the most harmful dioxin identified in the study
- Over 80% removal of heavy metals, including Lead, Arsenic, Cadmium and Chromium
These contaminants are commonly present in soot, combustion residues and industrial pollution.
*Single Pass as per ASTM D6661-17 methodology (a single back-and-forth motion using one wipe).
Supporting Worker Health
Research increasingly shows that exposure to contaminants such as PAHs can occur not only through inhalation but also through skin contact.
Rapid removal of contaminants from the skin can help reduce the risk of toxins entering the body and contributing to long-term occupational health issues.
DeWipe has therefore become part of contamination control protocols in industries where workers operate in hazardous environments.
Ongoing Research
The research programme with Manchester Metropolitan University continues to expand our understanding of contamination exposure and effective decontamination practices.
Further collaborative studies are helping to strengthen the evidence base supporting rapid skin decontamination as an important element of occupational health protection.
